Staying Put used to be normal. Now movement is a strategy

Not long ago, transferring schools was the exception in college athletics, not the rule. A player who left often sat out for a year, and the culture around them treated that choice as a last resort rather than a legitimate career move. Today, that calculus has flipped.

With immediate eligibility and open transfer windows, moving to a new program is no longer a sign that something went wrong — it's often a deliberate step toward better fit, more playing time, or a bigger opportunity. Coaches used to hold most of the leverage in that relationship; now players are active participants in shaping their own path, weighing offers and outcomes the way professionals do.

The result is a landscape where a student-athlete's career rarely runs in a straight line anymore — and where the skills to navigate that non-linear path have become just as important as the ones they show on the field.

How are you guiding your student-athletes through the process and journey?
